For more than a century, The Shore Club has been a part of the rich history of golf and coastal life in Cape May County. Founded in 1916 as the Wildwood Golf and Country Club, the club began on land that was once a local farm, with a vision of creating a place where the game of golf and the spirit of community could thrive.
The club’s original nine-hole course opened in 1918, laying the foundation for a tradition that would span generations. In 1921, renowned golf course architect Wayne E. Stiles was commissioned to design an 18-hole course alongside John Van Kleek. The new course officially opened on July 1, 1922, with golf pioneer Alexander Findlay striking the ceremonial first drive. From its earliest days, the club attracted notable figures in the game, including Walter Hagen, who competed in an exhibition match here in 1923 and established a course record of 71. In 1951, a young Arnold Palmer also visited the club while stationed in Cape May with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Over the decades, the course has evolved while preserving the character and design philosophy that define its roots. Changes to the surrounding landscape, including the construction of the Garden State Parkway in the 1950s, required adjustments to the original layout. In 1995, architect Brian Ault designed two new holes, further shaping the course members enjoy today. Through these changes, the club has remained committed to honoring its heritage while continuing to enhance the playing experience for golfers of all abilities.
In 2017, a group of dedicated members came together to secure the club’s future, ushering in a new chapter as The Shore Club. This member-driven revitalization brought renewed investment, improvements to the facilities, and a broader vision for a modern private club—one that balances a rich golfing tradition with an exceptional social experience for members and their families.
Today, The Shore Club is much more than a golf destination. Our 18-hole course, pickleball facilities, welcoming clubhouse, and indoor and outdoor dining provide the setting for a vibrant year-round community. From friendly rounds and competitive tournaments to weddings, charitable events, family celebrations, and memorable evenings with friends, the club offers countless ways to connect and create lasting memories.
More than a century after its founding, The Shore Club continues to honor the traditions that built its legacy while embracing the opportunities of tomorrow. Rooted in history and shaped by its members, it remains a place where exceptional golf, genuine relationships, and the distinctive spirit of the Jersey Shore come together.
